how to react to the corona virusHow are you all going ?

In light of events around the Corona Virus ramping up over the weekend I can only assume that, like me, you’re all now feeling the impact in one way or another.

Whilst I felt relatively untouched on Thursday, this morning is another story, with my next month looking totally different to how it was this time last week.

It’s incredible how quickly things are moving, and I know there’s a lot of uncertainty around how the next few months are going to play out.

Rather than hit my panic button, which is the easy option, I’ve been thinking this morning about how I want to react and act to this situation which still feels surreal. I thought I’d share my thoughts with you all, in case it helps you too.

1 – Now is the time to do the work. What’s been on your list for a long time? What products and programs have you been wanting to create or implement? When we unexpectedly get quiet periods on our hands, we must jump up and utilise it to our advantage! Personally I’m always complaining that I don’t have the time I need to work on my side projects, and I can’t use that excuse at present.

2 – Don’t disappear. Instead, ramp up connection with your community. Everyone is uncertain and no doubt anxious and scared as well. Who knows what the final impact on this will be for us all? It may be over in a month, but the impact that one month can have on a business can be long-lasting. Offer your support and comfort. Lead with empathy. Think about how you can help your community through this – what can you do, either personally or professionally that will make things easier? If you’re unsure, then just checking in with them will be appreciated.

3 – Look after yourself. Eat well (nothing beats home cooking), get out for walks and exercise, read a book that’s been on your list for months, learn something new, work on your business (see point one above!). And if you’ve got young kids, get them to teach you the latest TikTok dances (if you’re on IG, check out my story from last night if you want a laugh, but you’ll have to be quick).

4 – Lean into your brand. In times like these your brand’s messaging, purpose and values are more important than ever. Make sure your actions are aligned with your brand. Lead by example and don’t let any anxiety you’re feeling affect the way you would normally behave or talk to your community.

These are just some things I’m focussing on this week. Maybe they’ll help you focus too. I’d love to hear how you’re faring, and anything you’re doing or thinking at the moment to reduce the impact and keep the energy positive for both yourself and your audience.
