Rebecca Kartel from The Kartel Solution is a Melbourne-based bookkeeper with a difference. With a particular fondness for collecting Louis Vuitton handbags and drinking ALL THE COFFEE (what’s not to love about either of those things?), her vibe is fun, stylish and professional – so naturally I was excited when she asked me to create some new images for her website and social media.
When Rebecca first reached out to me about photos, she mentioned what I hear from SO many business owners:
“I’m not very photogenic and tend to shy away from the camera, yet in order to grow my brand and connect with my clientele, I realise I need to be scattered a little more throughout my socials.”
Whether we like it or not, we need to show up for our audience. They want to see us – they want to CONNECT with us. And with every small connection we make, we’re one step closer to earning their trust and loyalty, which will help them decide to work with us. Rebecca recognised this and I’m so glad she acted on it. And we also proved through her shoot that she IS photogenic, regardless of what she thinks! So many women I’ve photographed feel the same way, but it just takes some extra planning, the right equipment and lighting, and direction from a photographer who knows what they’re doing to create images you love ?
Once her session date was booked in we started the process of prepping for her shoot, and I love the result.
Rebecca works from home so doesn’t have an office but was after some casual and relaxed work photos – authentic images that show her personality, and also match the sophisticated and fresh look of her brand. My studio base, Luna Event Space, was our obvious choice as it has a professional look with an urban edge that we knew would match Rebecca’s brand aesthetic.
In addition to images of herself, an important part of Rebecca’s brief was to capture detail images for social media – unique images that could be used in place of stock. She brought along a selection of props that aligned with her messaging and brand and we allocated plenty of time through the shoot to create content she’s been able to use online since. Nothing beats being able to pull from your own unique content library when it comes to social media!
Rebecca’s expertise is bookkeeping, but the result of her skill is that her clients get to take back precious time in their day to not only spend time with their family, but also do things they love. Many of her clients are in the hospitality industry and love hitting the café scene, so we decided to do the same and spent the last part of her shoot on Chapel St, one of Melbourne’s popular hospitality precincts not far from where Rebecca lives. We were able to capture Rebecca’s love of coffee amongst an urban backdrop – images that we knew would resonate with her community and clients immediately. The colours and textures of Abacus cafe matched Rebecca’s rich and earthy brand palette perfectly, and their fitout also allowed us to do three different ‘looks’, so we stopped in for a quick caffeine hit in front of the camera before venturing down some side streets for more lifestyle images.
Lastly, family plays an important part in Rebecca’s life as it does for her clients, so we captured some images of her with her gorgeous kids and pooch – images that would add a personal touch to her content library and speak to her clients about what she values.
